James Madison Maverick Football Schedule Released

Sunday, June 25, 2006
7/23/2006 – Some news outlets call it the toughest district in Region IV, while others go as far as to say it’s the toughest district in the State, either way Maverick fans know you don’t get any weeks off when you play in “The 265.” Over the past several years few teams have had the success the Madison Mavericks have had, but nothing has ever come easy when you play teams like Smithson Valley, Judson and Churchill every year. This years schedule may be one of the Mavs toughest in recent history.

The season will kick off with a three-way scrimmage on August 25 at the new look Gustafson Stadium, against Warren and Tivy. Madison will be trying to fill some big shoes and this Scrimmage will give everyone a look at the 2006 Mavs and what they will bring to the table.

The Mavs will kick off the regular season on Thursday August 31 at the Texas Football Classic at the Alamodome. Just a few years ago having Seguin on your schedule would have meant resting starters and the possibility of a blow out, but not anymore. The Matadors have reached the playoffs the last two years and over that span amass a 15-7 record. The 2006 Seguin High School team might be the best squad they have had on I-10 East of San Antonio in a long time.

In the Mavericks second game they ride the busses again this time to Farris stadium to take on District 28-5A defending champs O’Connor. O’Connor will feature QB/TB TJ Horny and will also bring a big time defense unit to the field.

With the New 9 team 26-5A the Mavericks will open district play in just their third game of the year; they will also be traveling by bus again to be hosted this time by the first year squad from the New Wagner High School. Judson ISD newest high school will come into the year with big expectations and the Thunderbirds will be fired up to start their first ever 26-5A campaign.

The next Friday will be Madison’s first game at Comalander stadium as they take on Lee high school on September 22, 2006. Lee will bring to the table one of the best kept secrets in Region IV in RB Travis Lewis. Lewis opened a lot of eyes at the Army All-American combine when he posted a 4.34 second 40 time.

Madison will only get five days of rest before they host district rival and defending 26-5A champ Smithson Valley. The Mavs will be looking for revenge against the team that knocked them out of the playoffs in 2005.

October 6, 2006 will bring the homecoming festivities to Madison High School. The Mavs will have a hard test in front of the Alumni as they host the Reagan Rattlers. Reagan will bring top Junior RB Marcus Wright to try and spoil the party.

The scheduling Gods again don’t give the Mavs much of a break as they will only have five days to prepare for the Rivalry game against the Judson Rockets. Judson almost missed the playoffs last year then turned around and ran their way all the way to the state finals before being beaten by eventual champs Euless Trinity. This year the Rockets will have to again try and overcome the large exodus of students to the new High School (Wagner).

Madison plays on Saturday the rest of the season as they hit the home stretch against Churchill on Oct 21. Churchill hopes to get a full year out of Nick Fanuzzi their highly sought after QB that has been sidelined with injuries during the last two seasons.

October 28 brings the always popular “M and M” bowl as MacArthur and the Mavs lock horns in what could be an important game for both teams. Mac will also sport a Big time QB in Kevin Schmid who had the highest QB rating in 2005 when he got hurt against Smithson Valley and sat out the rest of the year.

Madison closes out the 2006 regular season on Saturday Nov 4 against the always athletic Roosevelt squad. The Roose will be under first year head coach Neal LaHue and will be one of the quickest teams Madison will face all year.

Madison actually ends their regular season a week earlier than most teams as they have a Bye week the last week of the year. This will be a great advantage if the Mavs are playoff bound to get healthy and rest up, and will give them an opportunity to go and see their first round opponent from district 25-5A as well. With the UIL stretching the playoff system to 4 teams from every district at the 5A level this year all of the games in district play will be important. And with the added team their will be a majority of teams still fighting for a playoff spot late into October.

The schedule is tough but it seems like every year Coach Streety puts out a quality team that has the potential to go deep into the playoffs.

Go Mavs!
