Seguin Matadors Scouting Report

Friday, June 30, 2006
Madison gets the pleasure of opening up the 2006 football season by playing in the Texas High School Football Classic at the Alamodome. Their opponent for this year’s contest is not a traditional powerhouse, but a team on the rise. The Seguin Matadors, fresh off their second straight playoff season, will battle the Mavericks on August 31, 2006. Five years ago Seguin was the region IV whipping stick, but this year’s team is probably one of the best they’ve had a long time and will compete for the district title in 25-5A

Matador Defense:
No question The strength of the Matador team is on the defensive side of the ball. The Mats run an attacking style defense, which is extremely hard to run on and equally impressive against the pass. The heart of the defense is linebacker Marcus Richardson, who will run the show for the gold and black. Richardson benefits from a defensive style that showcases linebackers. The defensive line plugs holes against the run and funnels the opposing running-backs into Richardson and Co. In 2005 Richardson recorded an incredible 137 tackles and has been named to the Texas High School Football Magazine preseason second-team defense at linebacker. While getting past the linebackers with the running game will be hard enough, the passing game will be just as tough as Seguin will showcase their 6-2 defensive back Desmond Jackson. The defensive coaches are not afraid to put Jackson on an island against the other team’s best wide receivers. And that is obvious, as Jackson recorded six INT’s in 2005. Jackson has also been recognized by the Texas High School Football Magazine as a third team defense selection at defensive back. The defensive line is led by Logan Johnson and his 13 ½ sacks from 2005.

Matador offense:
The matadors will be doing a lot of running in 2006, as they will return their top running back in Isaiah Snead. 2005 was a breakout year for Snead as he compiled 953 yards on the ground and 188 yards receiving, while collecting 13 touchdowns. Another one to watch on the offensive side of the ball is wide out Calvin Caad who has tremendous athletic ability. Caad is a deep ball threat and averaged 19 yards per reception and picked up six touchdowns in 2005. The matadors will be led by signal caller TJ Hartwick, but with limited experience under center Hartwick will probably hand off a lot to Snead and a full stable of running backs.

Matador special-teams:
The Seguin special-teams units may not be the best in the area overall, but with the always dangerous Desmond Jackson (DB) returning punts. There is always a chance of fireworks. Jackson returned three punts last year for touchdowns.

Matador Coach and extras:
Head coach Jim Carson returns, along with 20 Letterman and five starters on offense and six starters on defense. Last year’s team went seven and four overall and was 4-2 in district and made their second straight playoff appearance. The last meeting between Madison and Seguin was in 2004 in the first round of the playoffs. Madison came into that game without the services of starting quarterback Chris Calfisch or starting running back Tony Green. Madison escaped with a close victory at Judson Stadium to move on in the playoffs behind a gutsy defensive performance.
