Volleyball Has Rough Week But Is Still On Track

Sunday, October 08, 2006
Two losses in a week might make some uncomfortable with the playoff chances for the lady Mavs Volleyball team; but when your up against the likes of Smithson Valley and Reagan the losses don’t hurt your chances that much. Wins would have been huge for any playoff chances for the Mavs but losses don’t hurt the Mavs in their hunt for that last playoff spot.

Madison has seen these teams before and knew this week would be an uphill fight. Tuesday would see Madison travel to Smithson Valley, and to say the Valley is a Hostile environment might be and understatement. The Fans at Smithson valley were anything but cordial to the Mavs. The Ruckus crowd was helped by playing in one of the nosiest designed gyms in South Texas. Overcoming the Rangers is hard enough but to do so on their court is almost next to imposable.

Madison would not be able to get themselves into any type of groove against the Rangers, and would leave Smithson Valley High School with a strait set loss. While the loss stings as The Rangers right now are sitting alone in 3rd place, Madison’s hopes for a playoff spot did not take a hit with the loss.

Friday night the Mavs had more than the number 2 team in the state going against them. With most of the girls thinking about Homecoming, the Mavs had the early match at Littleton against Reagan. In an all Reagan weekend for Madison sports the Maverick Volleyball team had the toughest task of all of the sports.

The Lady Mavs would get some needed experience against one the best teams in the state and would keep each match close, but again would loose in strait sets. Sr. Amber Wetz would lead the Mavs in kills against the rattlers with 12.

With just 4 district matches left this season each one holds some importance. With Judson on the schedule for Tuesday, Madison will need to beat the Rockets for any chance at making the playoffs. Judson holds a 4-7 district record but always plays tough. Friday Madison goes up against another 26-5A juggernaut in Churchill. The Chargers are the #3 team in the area and have already beaten the Mavs once this year.

Not wanting to look ahead but if things go as planed this week, then we all need to circle next Tuesday October 17th at 7:15pm. Madison will have a chance at redeeming an early season loss to MacArthur and pull into a tie for 4th place in the district. Littleton Gym will be packed with Mac and Mavs supporters for a match that will be played like a playoff match.

But let’s take it one match at a time and beat Judson.
