Boys Basketball Ranked #6 in the State by TABC and #1 in the Area by E-N

Sunday, November 05, 2006
With out even tipping off in an official game the Madison Mavericks Varsity Boys basketball team is already receiving some big accolades. The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches has ranked the Mavs #6 in the state. Madison is the only team from Region IV to make the top 10 per-season poll. 26-5A rivals Reagan comes in at #11, and Churchill at #15. The only other Region IV teams to make the top 20 were Weslaco and Edinburg.

The Pre-Season Honors continued to roll in as the Express-News released their pre-season area rankings with Madison on top of the list at #1. Madison is also listed as the Coaches pick to defend their 26-5A district title. Coming off a 32-5 campaign in 2005 the only thing left for the Mavs to do is make a run in the playoffs.

This years team will be lead by Senior F Carlton Scott. A Power Forward at 6-7, Scott has already committed to play for Notre Dame next year. Madison will also have the services of Senior Post Larry Wilkins. A 2005 All-Area selection and 26-5A MVP, Wilkins is one of the more constant players in the area.

The boys basketball team will kick off their season on the 14th of November vs Sam Houston.

Madison Girls Basketball Open Season vs O’Connor and at Corpus Tourney

Madison Varsity Girls Basketball team kicks off their season vs O’Connor Tuesday night at Littleton Gym. Madison, coming off a playoff season of 2005, looks to improve on their 25-11 mark from last year. Madison will have 6 returning lettermen with Jenese Shaw, Teanna San Nicolas, Adrienne Bocanegra, Brook Matula, Candi Althaus and Lee Ann Terrell.

Madison first game will be against O’Connor who missed the playoffs last year but are picked by some to make a run in district 28-5A in 2006. The O’Connor vs Madison match up will tip off at 6:30pm at Littleton Gym. The game is part of the season opening triple hitter at Littleton with MacArthur vs Clark tipping off before the Lady Mavs game at 5:00pm, and the Roosevelt vs Taft match up closing out the night tipping off at 8pm.

Madison will take a road trip to Corpus on Thursday as they will compete in the always difficult Corpus Girls basketball Tourney. The three day event starts on Thursday November 9th with the Championship game being held Saturday Nov 11th.

Football Season Ends with Hope for Next Year

The 2006 Football season ended uneventfully on Saturday night as the Madison Mavericks dropped to 5-5 on the season with a loss to Roosevelt. The season was over for the football team and for the seniors it was an unexpected end to their final season. But there is a silver lining to the end of the 2006 season, and that is 2007.

Returning next year will be 7 offensive starters, and 8 defensive starters. Most of the skill positions will be back lead by #26 RB Devin Thomas. After missing the first game of the 2006 season with an injury, Devin racked up almost 2000 yards and lead the Madison mavericks in several statistical categories including rushing and Touch downs.

Also returning will be several players with QB experience including #4 Bryan Ehrlich. Almost all of the Madison WR will return including the electric Josh Miles and Chris Powel. Madison will have to fill some big shoes on the offence line but returning lettermen Josh Corby will anchor a young line next year.

On The defensive side of the ball Madison will have a stable of experience coming back. Defensive Ends Eddie Pitts and Michael Williams will both be back, but Madison will have to fill a void at Defense Tackle. All three Linebackers will return in McClean, Lawson and Flores. In the defensive backfield Madison will have to find a replacement at One Cornerback position but will retain the services of Chris Lambeth, Sophomore Andrew Green, and Mario Wiggins.

Madison 2007 season will be tough early as it was this year as they will go up against two programs that will be playing in the post season this year in Seguin and O’Connor. The O’Connor game will be the Home opener for the 2007 Madison Mavericks.

Swim and Dive Take On MacArthur on Thursday at Davis

Both girls and boys swim teams will compete this Thursday at Davis vs MacArthur. This is the swim teams first duel meet of the season and will be held at Davis Natatorium Thursday Evening at 6pm.

The Girls squad will be lead by Senior Ronnie Smith and Jonnell Williamson. Smith currently holds the 7th fastest time in the area in the 200 free with a 2:04.37. Smith will have some tough competition in the race from Mac as she will have to go up against several MacArthur swimmers that are Ranked in the area.

The Boys squad is lead by James Shanke, Alex Sanchez and Landon Colson. Shanke is on of the top all around performers in the area with top 10 times in several events. His list of early season accomplishments is quite impressive. Shanke holds the 3rd fastest time in the area in the 100 Backstroke with a 55.97, the 5th fastest time in the area in the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.46, the 5th fastest time in the area in the 200 free with a 1:52.55, and the 6th fastest time in the area in 100 free with a 50.83.

MacArthur has a good swim and Dive team so this should be a good measuring stick for both squads.
