Maverick Football Team Break Record As They Run Past Reagan!

Sunday, October 08, 2006
People around the State will tell you their Football district is tough and the competition is fierce week in and week out. People will say that until you explain to them the make up 26-5A. Reagan who has never made the playoffs would probably be running away with most 5A districts around the state; came into the Friday night 26-5A thriller with their backs against the wall needing to knock off the Mavs to keep their playoff hopes alive. And while the Madison rushing attack overwhelmed the Rattlers, they gave the Mavs all they could handle.

It’s not a secret around San Antonio that Devin Thomas is emerging as another great back playing for Madison. It’s not a secret that Madison’s offensive line is one of the best units in the area’ but what happened Friday at Comalander made most people stop and stare as the jaw-dropping performance put on by the offence.

Each week this site features photos taken from different Madison contest, and each week Devin Thomas finds his way onto a feature photo somewhere on this site. This week, while the Express-news talks all about Devin, we wanted to showcase the unsung heroes. The offensive line of the Madison Mavericks. No one should be congratulated more for the posting of the 487 yards then Devin but with out the Line and their total domination of the Rattler front seven one starts to wonder if the Friday night game would have looked a lot different for the Mavs.

With numbers like 532 total yards all on the ground on 42 plays, and an average of just under 13 yards per carry, the offence has come into its own. With big games on the horizon the thought of the Madison’s massive line must have many defense coordinators up late at night.

The Mavs showed a lot of grit and determination as the Hard Charging Rattlers came storming back from a 35-14 deficit, that was started by a 53 yard FG by Reagan as time expired in the first half. Reagan would threaten several times to tie or take the lead but the overworked Madison defense held up under the pressure to preserve the victory.

Madison now enters the final stretch run and it looks to be the toughest stretch of games they have seen all year. Judson comes to Comalander on a short week of preparation on Thursday night. The Rockets have posted wins over Roosevelt and MacArthur and have on district loss to Churchill. This match up became extremely important after MacArthur beat Churchill on Saturday night as 26-5A just became even tighter. A Madison victory puts them in the driver seat for the top seed in Division I in the state playoffs. A loss and they will be fighting for their playoff lives the rest of the way.

Thank you for mentioning the O-Line. They are a great group, but we would like to see more of Michael learned, left tackle #71. Seems like every other line man has a picture and a comment except him. Just ask his coaches if he if worthy of some recognition.....
